Travertines
Travertines are a natural wonder located in Pamukkale, Turkey. These unique geological formations are created by calcium-rich mineral deposits left behind by hot springs. Over time, the buildup of these minerals creates stunning white terraces and pools that cascade down the hillsides.
Visitors can walk barefoot on the travertines, feeling the warm and slightly slippery texture under their feet. The pools of water are crystal clear and inviting, though swimming is now restricted in order to protect the delicate ecosystem.
In addition to the travertines, Pamukkale is also home to the ancient ruins of Hierapolis, a Greco-Roman city founded in the 2nd century BC. The city’s hot springs were renowned for their healing properties and many of the ruins, including a large theater, are still standing and open to visitors.
For a unique experience, visitors can also take a hot air balloon ride over the travertines and surrounding landscape. From high above, the patterns and shapes of the travertines are even more impressive.
With its combination of natural beauty and ancient history, Pamukkale’s travertines and Hierapolis are a must-see destination for any traveler to Turkey.
